Always looking for something new, interesting and you don’t mind the cold? Then you should come to the one of the coolest places in the world – Lumilinna the Snow Castle of Kemi. It’s open for visitors every year from the end of January until the beginning of April. With its unique cool surroundings and average temperature of 25°F (5°C) below zero visitors can experience the cold which is pretty much the same as it is on the North Pole. If you decide to come here don’t worry about catching a cold, the sleeping bags are especially designed for extreme conditions and they are even used by people who go on expeditions.

Since its being rebuilt annually the size, the shape, and the theme of the Castle are different each year but there is always something interesting to see. The only elements that remain constant are a hotel, a restaurant and a chapel. Last year’s theme was comics, and you could see characters from Ice Age, Spiderman, Sponge Bob Square Pants, the Simpsons and many more around. This frozen hotel has 29 double bedrooms and a honeymoon suite which are decorated with local materials by the local artists. As the rest of the castle restaurant is made from materials specific for the Northern areas. Tables are made of ice, seats are covered with special reindeer fur and all the decorations are ice sculptures. Because it seats around 200 people it is necessary to make a reservation a couple of days in advance. They serve hot and cold beverages as well as snacks, dinner and lunch. Also a part of the castle is a small chapel where many people have their wedding; some even come from USA, Russia, Brazil, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, China.

There is also a gallery, ice tower, rooftop terrace, sauna, labyrinth, an adventure land for children, ice art exhibitions with sound and light effects and many other things, which may vary from year to year. If you bring your children to the Snow Castle it also has two mascots, Arttu and Terttu, who look like snowballs and have interesting stories for entertaining the kids.

So, if you like winter and enjoy unusual or weird hotels this may be the most interesting way for you to spend your holiday time because you never know what the theme will be next year and what will it look like. The SnowCastle of Kemi is celebrating 20th anniversary in 2015.
